Half the internet says yes, half warns you’ll set your kitchen on fire. Both are right in their own way — parchment paper is safe in an air fryer if you use it correctly, and dangerous if you don’t. The difference is one detail almost every “quick tip” post skips.

The one rule: never preheat with empty parchment

An air fryer works by blasting hot air. A dry sheet of parchment paper is very light — with no food weighing it down, the airflow lifts it up and can slap it against the heating element on top of the basket. Once it touches the element, it can char and, in rare cases, catch fire.

The safe way is simple: put food on top of the parchment before you turn the fryer on. Food weighs it down and keeps it flat. Never preheat with only paper in the basket.

Use perforated (or make your own holes)

Solid parchment blocks airflow through the basket’s mesh — the whole reason a basket has holes is that hot air needs to circulate under the food. A flat solid sheet turns the basket into a mini oven and undoes what an air fryer does best (crispy bottoms).

Options:

  • Buy perforated air fryer liners (round or square, sized to common baskets). They’re cheap and the holes are already there.
  • Or use regular parchment and punch several holes through it before adding food.
  • Never use wax paper. Wax melts and smokes at air fryer temperatures — not the same as parchment even though the sheets look similar.

Does parchment survive air fryer temperatures?

Most kitchen parchment is rated to about 425°F (218°C), which covers almost all air fryer cooking. Check your parchment box before pushing to the top of the temperature range. If you’re doing high-heat pizza or bread, a silicone liner is safer than paper.

When to skip the liner entirely

Use no liner when:

  • You want maximum bottom crisp (fries, wings, tater tots — these benefit from direct basket contact).
  • Cooking at 425°F+.
  • Preheating (see the rule above).

Use a liner when:

  • Food is sticky or drippy (marinated wings, cheese-heavy things, breaded fish).
  • Cleanup would otherwise be a scrubbing job.
  • Cooking small pieces that would fall through the basket.

For general cleanup habits, our cleaning guide covers what to do with or without a liner.

The bottom line

Parchment paper in an air fryer is safe when weighted down by food and perforated for airflow, and dangerous only when preheated empty or used solid. Skip wax paper entirely, use silicone above 425°F, and skip the liner altogether when you want maximum crisp. It’s a minute’s setup for much easier cleanup on sticky cooks — no burnt kitchens, no smoke alarms.
